PHILADELPHIA - The Soul continue their winning ways in front of their 10,062 fans at the Wells Fargo Center after beating the Iowa Barnstormers, 60-55.
| The Soul and the Barnstormers were fighting back and forth the entire game. The game started off with Soul's QB Dan Raudabaugh throwing an interception off of his first possession. The Barnstormers quickly marched up the field for a Derik Steiner 1 yard touchdown. The Soul then responded right back off of a Tiger Jones touchdown for 6 yards from QB Dan Raudabaugh. |
In the 4th quarter, things started to get heated between the two division rivals. When it was 3:00 minutes left, Philadelphia did a controversial onside kick after a Raudabaugh to Jones 9-yard touchdown that put them up 54-52. Iowa recovered at the Soul's 8 and fortunately for the Soul, the Barnstormers only kicked a FG with 0:43 seconds left. The Soul were moving up the field successfully and Raudabaugh threw a game winning touchdown to WR Tiger Jones with 0:03 seconds left that gave them the 60-55 lead. The Soul tried to do a dropkick but they fumbled and Iowa scored a touchdown at the other end. However, the referees said that the Iowa touchdown didn't count and the player that fumbled (Raudabaugh) is the only one that can pick up the ball when it's under 2 minutes to play. This ended the game and the Soul won their third straight game.
“That was a classic Arena Football game,” Clint Dolezel told reporters after the game. “It was a little closer than I would have liked, but what was important is that we got the win. We still need to continue to get better. We are not satisfied with where we are and will have a tough one next week in Pittsburgh.”
Soul's QB Dan Raudabaugh put on an excellent showing against Iowa despite his early game turnover. He went 26-35, 283 yards and 9 touchdowns.
"We took the rearview mirror off of those first three games and were not looking back at all," Raudabaugh told reporters after the game. " "We're looking forward."
Raudabaugh received a big boost from WR V'Keon Lacey and WR Anthony 'Tiger' Jones. Lacey had 65 yards off of 5 receptions, and 3 touchdowns. Jones on the other hand, had 52 yards off of 7 receptions and 5 touchdowns.
"I just waited till my number was called." WR V'Keon Lacey said. "I'm new to the team so I just have to wait my turn, I just have to make those plays."
" [Iowa] they were playing soft," Tiger Jones said on Iowa's defense since he scored five touchdowns. "They were dropping in the zone and when we got down in the red zone we just had to convert."
DB TJ Langley, Rayshaun Kizer and James Romain were the main leaders for the defense. Langley recorded 6 tackles with 2.5 sacks, Kizer (7.0 tackles) and Romain (6.0 tackles) both had a fumble recovery that benefited the win for the Soul.
Iowa's QB Carson Coffman had a great outing for the Barnstormers. He went 21-31, 306 yards and five touchdowns. His main target on the night was WR Marco Thomas who recorded 158 yards with two touchdowns.
Soul Insider spoke to former Soul's coach and now Iowa's coach, Mike Hohensee on what was it like to return back to Philadelphia.
"I really wasn't thinking that way," Hohensee told Soul Insider. "It's been 3 years and we are working to get our team to the level of the Soul. They have set the standard for this conference. But it was good seeing so many familiar faces again."
Hohensee was also asked on if this was a Soul team he expected.
"Of course." Hohensee said. "We didn't look at the record, we focused on the film."
The Soul will carry lots of momentum when they travel to face their division rivals, the Pittsburgh Power (3-3) this Saturday. Kickoff is set for 7pm ET at the CONSOL Energy Center.
