The Soul as a team was just anemic to watch. On the offensive side, not only did the Soul score 33 points, but almost went the entire second half scoreless. Philadelphia scored a touchdown when it was 1 minute left in the fourth quarter from a Bryan Randall pass. The Soul then tried to go for two but it was picked off by Arizona.
Speaking of Bryan Randall, it was a struggling game for both QBs from Philly. QB Dan Raudabaugh went 11-27, 131 yards, 3TDs and 1INT. Towards the end of the game, Raudabaugh got sacked that essentially forced him to come out with an injury for rookie QB Bryan Randall. Randall went 6/11, 73 yards and scored his 1TD in his career. It was a good showing for Randall but the lack of the offensive flow hided his performance.
SaberCats’ CB Clevan Thomas was the one who got a pick six on QB Dan Raudabaugh in the 3rd quarter. He spoke to reporters briefly after the game to reflect on the game and the interception.
“It’s basically trusting the game better.” Thomas told a reporter from KTCTAM. “It’s more so of relying on the D- line and the D- line relying on us. It was a statement game from the start. Them (Soul) and Arizona are the top two teams in the league so we knew how important it was to get this win.”
The Soul also experienced some notable injuries. FB Derrick Ross limped off of the field with a hamstring injury late in the third quarter and WR V’Keon Lacey left the game right before halftime with a finger injury. Both players never returned to the game so their return back on the field is undisclosed.
Soul’s WR Ryan McDaniel spoke to Soul Insider after the game to discuss the frustrating loss.
“Everything went wrong, we weren’t connecting through the air and the ground game was shaky.” McDaniel told Soul Insider. “That’s just not Soul football.”
One of my keys to the game was for the pass defense to step their game up but the defense worsened from last week’s game. Last week, the Soul only lost by 7 points, this week Philly has lost by 37 points.
San Jose’s QB Nathan Stanley, who won offensive player of the game, threw for a total of 249 yards, 6 touchdowns and no turnovers against the Soul’s defense.
Soul Insider spoke with Soul’s DB Joe Goosby after the game to figure out what went wrong on the defensive side of things.
“I don’t like to make excuses.” Goosby said, “I just feel like we didn’t execute our game plan. We also didn’t get any turnovers and in the arena so that’s huge.”
Head coach, Clint Dolezel was not pleased with the performance and says that they have the bye week to re-group.
“We were beat in every phase of the game,” Dolezel said in a press release. “We have the bye so that we can re-group, and get healthy. As a team, we are clearly not happy with the performance tonight.”
The Soul will now go into the bye week to rest up, and work on things to improve for the rest of the season. After the bye week, they face the Tampa bay Storm who are currently undefeated this season at 2-0.
