PHILADELPHIA - The Soul recorded a season high in points as they defeated the New Orleans Voodoo in front of 6,000 fans, 79-60.
The Soul opened up the first drive of the game with confidence by a WR Ryan McDaniel run for 2 yards that put them up 7-0. New Orleans, on the other hand, looked discombobulated on their first drive by receiving pressure from the Soul's front. However, they quickly silenced the upbeat-Philadelphia crowd by QB Kurt Rocco throwing a 42 yard touchdown to WR Larry Beavers.
It was a close game in the first quarter with the Soul leading, 14-13 but in the second quarter, things started to click with the Soul. Philadelphia only allowed one touchdown from the Voodoo and each time the Soul had the ball, they scored. The Soul ended the half by going up 31-20. They outscored the Voodoo 17-7 in that quarter.
After the second half commenced, the Soul's defense and special teams erupted into a key factor in their win. During the kickoff of the 3rd quarter, the Voodoo fumbled and WR V'Keon Lacey recovered for a touchdown that shifted the game quickly. Conversely, DB Rayshaun Kizer and James Romain seemed like twin brothers in the second half. Both of them recorded two interceptions on New Orleans. In addition, One of Romain's and Kizer's interceptions resulted in a pick six. (Romain 3rd Q; Kizer 4th Q).
"It felt great," DB Rayshaun Kizer said on his pick six. "It's been like eight games since I had a pick so it gets a little frustrating. My teammates were encouraging me on the sidelines to make a play, and I went out there and made one."
"I don't like to be cocky but when I get the ball in my hands, i'm very elusive." DB James Romain said on his pick six after the game to reporters. "When I get the ball in my hands, i'm thinking pick six every time."
Despite his second half struggles, Voodoo's QB Kurt Rocco put on an excellent showing. Rocco finished the night by going 22/43, 8 touchdowns and 335 yards.
QB Dan Raudabaugh, named offensive player of the game, showed very little of adversity in helping the team score a season high in points. He went 19-26, threw 5 touchdowns and 271 yards.
"I got to give the credit to the offensive line for blocking, receivers for making plays, coach calling the plays and i'm just trying to do my job," Raudabaugh said. "But hey, that's how it goes in Arena Football, sometimes you got to throw 8-10 touchdowns, sometimes we might only throw 2 or 3. New Orleans had a really good scheme, they played a lot of zone coverage as opposed to the other teams we played that play man, we just got to read, recognize, and make plays."
Soul head coach, Clint Dolezel was proud of his team after this game and says that it feels good that the Soul are back at .500.
"The greatest thing is, we won by 19 and that's just how this game works. Fast-paced and it's stressful." Dolezel said. "We know we are a better football team than what the record shows and that's just the nature of the business. We're looking at one game at a time."
The Soul will have a very tough matchup next week against the 3-5 Tampa Bay Storm. Even though the Storm are on a 4 game losing streak, they still defeated the Soul badly in week three, 63-49. The game is catchable on ESPN 3 and The Comcast Network.
